Continuing Art Exhibit at Town Hall Dec. - March Jeff Spiegel
Jeff Spiegel
My semi-abstract work represents insights about nature, life experiences, night
and daydreams. By experimenting with plaster, acrylics, oil and spray paint,
metal objects, wood crafted from our own cherry and ash trees and even motor
oil, I’ve been able to reveal a myriad of provocative and engaging images that
serve as metaphors for how I’ve experienced the world.
My approach whenever starting a work is to consider a particular theme about
which I’ve been reflecting. This may originate from a past or recent experience, a
current problem that I’ve encountered, or an appreciation for something that has
helped fulfill my life. My workspace is also unique for this kind of meditative
work. It’s a post and beam, timber framed studio and workshop designed and
built from cherrywood and ash from our homestead. It’s the perfect environment
for engaging in art.
My work is eclectic. I paint mostly abstract, sculpt and often combine mediums.
I enjoy taking elements from nature like a bird’s nest or discarded pieces of
metal or old farm implements and integrate them into a transformative image or
3 dimensional form.
Making art for me is unquestionably a problem making and resolving process
that can lead to completing a work in an hour or a month. There are no time
constraints. Sometimes it’s best to stop when feeling stuck; other times it makes
sense to push through; whatever my instincts guide me. Viewing a final piece is
always a surprise that reveals new discoveries and inspirations for future work.
